When I first heard this song, I thought, "This could be the anthem of every college student." But maybe it could be the anthem of our entire society.
Lately though, I think this is only half of the picture. The above is the anthem of when we're really being honest with ourselves, after just having a "bad night." The rest of the time, we're still singing this one (minus the Little Mermaid clips...).
Stuck between these two things, no wonder we are confused.

I used to feel exactly the same way as the first song. I'd get involved with truly wonderful men...and then end up feeling like my nose was pushed up against the glass...LOOKING at all the potential in the relationship without being able to work out how to get through the glass. I don't miss that "glass" at all! It's great waking up in the same cheerful mood we went to sleep in - with no mysterious weirdness and emotional distance.
I don't s'pose our lovemaking could be called "instant pleasure," but it always feels really good to us, and we both love knowing that our touch is always welcome to each other.
I guess my point is that
I guess my point is that it's not so easy to get on the "inside of love" if you're still stuck in "instant pleasure" mode.
Yes, and it's
an excellent point. You wanna try to explain this to college students?
Actually, Marnia
I would dearly love to try! Although, it seems even better to try high school students- younger and more open to new ideas. I can't imagine what an appropriate venue would be, however...
I hear you
It's tough. Any kind of self-control is perceived as silly and hopelessly outdated. But I think the science is actually (indirectly) supporting the idea that self-control has merit. It takes time for these things to trickle down.
As for reaching kids, we wrote a small, humorous book on "Things You Didn't Know about Porn" for young guys, age 11, but can't get it published anywhere...yet.
On a brighter note in terms of education (although not for kids), Gary and I just watched an excellent, funny documentary on an experiment about use of porn and its effects on attitudes toward relationship, women, infidelity, etc. Really genuine and entertaining. Full of facts - including facts about the links between the porn industry and many large corporations - as well as porn makers sponsoring conferences of sex educators. *rolls eyes*
And we wonder why the mainstream can't see the obvious!! Anyway, anyone can download and watch it for $2.99 at Amazon. "Adult Entertainment: Disrobing an American Idol"
