I want to share with you that I've been having a tough time lately. I recently went on Klonopin, which is a highly addictive anti-anxiety medication. I'm taking a low dosage thankfully. My psychiatrist wants to put me on an anti-depressant as well, but I spoke to my psychotherapist and he thinks that would be a terrible idea. So I think that won't happen. I've been feeling weepy and whiney and I'm masturbating about once every other day; which is better than I've done over my lifetime, but not as good as I've done in the past year. I've given up on 12-Step programs, at least for now.
I'm so grateful that I have this community to share my ups and downs with.

Prolactin problem, perhaps?
William, if you are masturbating every couple of days, your brain is continuously awash in prolactin. And what are the effects of prolactin? From http://www.reuniting.info/science "...we have personally noticed a two-week hangover of mood swings following conventional orgasm, as have others who have observed themselves carefully. ... Prolactin also appears to be a stress hormone - one which correlates with feelings of inablility to control life events. Repeated, seemingly-inexplicable relationship disharmony may trigger the despair sometimes associated with higher levels of prolactin." (emphasis added)
Um, do you notice any similarity to your symptoms?
I found this interesting: http://www.reuniting.info/science/prolactin_sex_libido "Men with high prolactin levels sometimes report erectile dysfunction, low libido, headaches, and mood changes (anxiety)." That's interesting for me, because I seldom get headaches, but about 4 of the 5 or so I've had in the past year happened the day after I had an orgasm following several weeks of abstinence.
It's been a month since my last orgasm, and I feel amazingly good. I lost my steady job a week ago, and haven't felt depressed - I just got busy with job hunting and other projects. And I'm averaging five hours of sleep per night - sometimes I get just two or three hours of sleep - but I feel like my alertness and energy level are normal. A year ago, before I got onto this low-orgasm "diet" and was having an orgasm every day, I would be a basket case if I got only two hours of sleep.
Maybe it's time to get off that dopamine/prolactin roller coaster and get back on the abstinence wagon, William. See if you start feeling better in two or three weeks. You know how to do it... one day at a time.
Good luck!
