The Secret History of Western Sexual Mysticism

Cover of 'Western Sexual MysticismThe Secret History of Western Sexual Mysticism: Sacred Practices and Spiritual Marriage by Michigan State University professor Arthur Versluis (2008) is a refreshing look at sacred sex in the West. Versluis bravely pulls a lot of sacred sex traditions out of the pigeonholes into which academics have placed them, and re-examines them. The book is short, which makes it an easy read, but it is not comprehensive.

Aldous Huxley - essay on karezza's heritage

Huxley portraitThis essay is from a 1956 book of essays by Aldous Huxley entitled "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" (or in the UK, "Adonis and the Alphabet"). It appeared on this web page in one block of text, and to make it more legible, I have inserted paragraphs as I saw fit, with apologies to the late Mr. Huxley.

Every civilization is, among other things, an arrangement for domesticating the passions and setting them to do useful work. The domestication of sex presents a problem whose solution must be attempted on two distinct levels of human experience, the psycho-physiological and the social.

TANTRA: The Secret Power of Sex (excerpts)

Shiva and ShaktiA site member shared an older text from India on the subject of Tantra: TANTRA: The Secret Power of Sex by Arvind and Shanta Kale.

The material is interesting, not only because it echoes a lot of the tips about karezza: attunement between lovers, effortlessness, and so forth, but also because it gives a description of some of the altered states that lovers encounter while "floating."

Transorgasmic Sex

LoversLearn about an inspiring new model for sexuality, created by Chilean Psychologist Franscisco Moreno. Here are his remarks describing it.

Transorgasmic sex is based in thermodynamics, and heavily influenced by the work of C. G. Jung. I use the term "irreversible expansion" (for example, an atomic explosion) for the orgasmic experience, and "reversible expansion" (for example, a nuclear reactor) for the transorgasmic experience.

Transorgasmic consciousness has existed in all cultures. It does not belong to sexuality only. Even in sports and other physical or aesthetic disciplines we find experiences similar to transorgasmic.

Barry Long - Advice About Masturbation

So you're single for the moment, and have lots of delicious testosterone coursing through your manly (or goddessy) veins. Perhaps you've tried the instant gratification of porn (or sexual fantasy) and found that there were some hidden costs you don't like paying...such as flashbacks to images you'd rather not have playing in your head without invitation...or a sense that things are escalating in a way you find disturbing.

The Lazy Way to Stay in Love

(This article has been updated.)
I’ve always wondered why moving, intimate experiences like the Ecstatic Exchanges can create such powerful shifts for couples…and yet why it is so easy for stagnation to creep back into an intimate relationship. Recently I stumbled upon an insight that furnishes an answer to both questions.

We humans are programmed for both reproductive urges (mating) and for physical and emotional closeness (bonding). The bonding program evolved primarily to bond us to our parents, and our kids. This powerful caregiver-infant connection is so fundamental that it is what separates mammals from reptiles. Reptiles just lay eggs and wander off; baby mammals need strong emotional ties to their caregivers for a time in order to survive.

Recipe for A Healthy World

wise manCarl Jung recounted the following story, told to him by Richard Wilhelm, who lived in China for many years:p. 419-20 Mysterium Coniunctionis: an Inquiry into the Separation and Synthesis of Psychic Opposites in Alchemy, vol 14 Bollingen Series XX: The Collected Works of C. G. Jung, 2d edition, trans by R.F.C. Hull, Princeton University Press 1976

There was a great drought where Wilhelm lived; for months there had not been a drop of rain and the situation became catastrophic. The Catholics made processions, the Protestants made prayers, and the Chinese burned joss-sticks and shot off guns to frighten away the demons of the drought, but with no result.
Finally the Chinese said, 'We will fetch the rain-maker.' And from another province a dried up old man appeared. The only thing he asked for was a quiet little house somewhere, and there he locked himself in for three days.
On the fourth day the clouds gathered and there was a great snow-storm at the time of the year when no snow was expected, an unusual amount, and the town was so full of rumours about the wonderful rain-maker that Wilhelm went to ask the man how he did it.
In true European fashion he said: 'They call you the rain-maker; will you tell me how you made the snow?'
And the little Chinese said: 'I did not make the snow; I am not responsible.'
'But what have you done these three days?'
'Oh, I can explain that. I come from another country where things are in order. Here they are out of order; they are not as they should be by the ordinance of heaven. Therefore the whole country is not in Tao, and I also am not in the natural order of things because I am in a disordered country. So I had to wait three days until I was back in Tao and then naturally the rain came.'”
