How much do passions and goals matter both in finding a partner and maintaining a relationship? This is spoken about all over the place, but it doesn’t seem well substantiated. Perhaps it is code like many things for how much money and thus commoditized value someone earns/has. Goallessness can be negative, but I’m not sure it is inherently so. Few have no goals, but many have goals they don’t want to share. Some people are generalists and don’t intend to become expert or *rise* by delving deeper into any one thing.

A recent review of goal-seeking studies (Custers and Aarts, 2010, Science, vol. 329, pp 47-50) (Abstract: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/329/5987/47) concludes that humans may pursue goals that are not endorsed by or even apparent to conscious awareness. Furthermore, consciously-pursued goals are subject to influence by subconscious 'primers' experienced prior to conscious engagement. A principal conclusion from the article is worth quoting at length:

My wife, now 8 months pregnant, looked particularly appealing to me this morning. I like her curviness, and I think carrying the baby around has toned her legs. I told her: "Hey honey, it is day 21". This was our previous goal. I haven't had an O in three weeks now, and I think she likely goes back farther than that, albeit for different reasons. Her response: "Oh my goodness!" For good reason, I think her focus has been on other things.

Hey everyone. I've been up and down lately, on the bi-polar swing. Figured I would check in.
I have decided that its time to abstain again, and its been 5 days now. I have been one crabby, sore SOB. I mean, "a bad mood" doesn't describe my attitude these past few days. At work last night I screamed at my supervisor, and told him to get the @#$& out of my trailer (I load packages at UPS). My roommate asked me today if i've been doing alright.

I just recently hit my first set goal of 15 days without porn/ejaculation.
After I blogged about my success, Hotspring asked me what my next goals are, and I thought, "how appropriate." It is kind of that time of year anyways. Welcome 2009! I predict a year of personal growth, development, change, newness, and hope!
So lets hear 'em... Goals, New Years Resolutions, Hopes, Dreams, Aspirations, Lofty Aims, Simple Edicts, whatever you want to share.
