For those of you not familiar with Thelema Press, it is an organization devoted to sharing the teachings of the late Samael Aun Weor (more on him in a moment). The 75-minute film is a rich tapestry of sacred sex symbolism from around the world. The narrative weaves various traditions into its account, including the Kabbala, Western Europe’s alchemy symbols, Tantra, Mayan carvings, Tibetan Buddhism, and various Christian gospels. It is inspiring to see the parallels between these traditions, even if they have been interpreted radically differently over the years.
One symbol traced throughout the film is the theme of the serpent, or double serpent. We learn that the double serpent represents the sexual energy or kundalini of male and female rising in synergistic exchange. The serpent, or sexual energy, can either be raised to reconnect us with the Divine, or used to pursue physical gratification, thus anchoring us more firmly to matter…and suffering.
Obviously mankind has generally chosen the latter course, and the film traces that error in detail, comparing clues from various cultures. It concludes that humanity's blunder was procreating with the use of orgasm. This innocent mistake triggered an increasing attachment to material plane sensations. Not only that, it actually lowered humans into a denser plane than the one it inhabited when male and female were united through love alone, rather than physical gratification.
The film thus has an unambiguous message: use sex to reverse this error by (1) purifying the bad habits born of material plane attachments (greed, gluttony, lust, pride, envy etc.), and (2) making love within a committed union, without orgasm.
The film also distinguishes between three types of tantra: black, gray and white. It explains that black tantra emphasizes orgasmic release, thus leading to cravings and suffering. Gray tantra teaches that some orgasms are appropriate, which puts one on a slippery slope toward black tantra. White tantra, on the other hand, teaches the value of consistently channeling the sexual energy upward where it facilitates union with the Divine.
White tantra is the "secret gate to Eden" because it reverses the error that humanity made in the first place.
Samael Aun Weor
The film is based on the teachings of a modern-day, somewhat fiery prophet who took the spiritual name "Samael Aun Weor," and also referred to himself as "Kalki Avatar." He was born VÃctor Manuel Gómez RodrÃguez in Bogotá, Colombia. (1917 — 1977) From an early age, he was interested in the occult, focusing first on Theosophical and Rosicrucian materials, and later upon the indigenous lore of Central and South America. Eventually he founded the World Gnostic Movement. I first learned of his existence via a man in Spain who had found our website, and recognized that our website was sharing insights from many of the same traditions.
Samael Aun Weor taught that to gain possession of one's soul (which is the same thing as forming one's solar body), one must employ the means used to form physical offspring, that is, sex. One does this by arousing the sexual energies through intercourse, but instead of expelling them during orgasm, one transmutes them into a higher octave of energy. The "birth" of the solar body upward, through several octaves, is the true meaning of being "born again."
This concept is very similar to those contained in other sacred sex traditions. Samael Aun Weor's writings, however, are often laced with dire warnings. I sometimes fear that his threats of hell and of falling under Satan's influence may actually be counter-productive as people attempt to learn a new way to make love. A sense that an activity is risky can raise dopamine, thus making a forbidden activity (in this case, orgasm) even more thrilling and addictive.
Happily, the film concentrates on the substantive value of his teachings instead of his language.
Excerpts from "The Perfect Matrimony"
Here are some quotations from Samael Aun Weor's book The Perfect Matrimony (1950)1:
Sometimes man and woman feel the radiations of Love which flow from the embryo of the Soul, but they are immediately suffocated by the violent and terrible passions which Satan gives to man and also to woman.
People believe that Love is only to perpetuate the species. People only believe that Love is vulgarity, carnal pleasure, violent desire, satisfaction etc. Only the person who can see beyond these animal passions, only the person who renounces this type of animal psychology can discover in other worlds and dimensions the grandeur and majesty of that which is called Love.
Samael Aun Weor, too, warns of the "separation" phenomenon in conventional, orgasmic sex:
How many times have we seen couples who claim that they adore each other? After marriage the castle of cards falls down and what remains is the sad reality. Those who believed they were truly in Love, in reality hate each other, and once desire is satisfied, failure is inevitable. Then we only hear complaints and regrets, reproaches and tears. Where was Love? What happened to Love?...
With the Arcanum A.Z.F. [sex without orgasm] we can retain all of that marvelous light, all those cosmic currents, all those Divine powers. Then Kundalini awakens, the sacred Fire of the Holy Spirit within us, and we are transformed into Terribly Divine Gods.
But when we spill the semen, the cosmic currents are lost within the universal currents and the Luciferic forces of evil, the fatal magnetism, a sanguineous light, penetrates the Souls of the two beings. Then Cupid withdraws, weeping, the doors of Eden close, love becomes disillusionment, disenchantment arrives, and only the black reality of this valley of tears remains.
He addresses the kundalini energy:
Kundalini awakens negatively only when the semen is spilled. Whoever practises Sexual Magic without spilling the semen has nothing to fear. Nobody can realise the superior aspects of Kundalini without perfect sanctity. It is then false to say that there are disastrous possibilities in the premature actualisation of Kundalini [via intercourse]. This affirmation is false because the premature actualisation of Fire cannot occur. Kundalini can only be activated based on sanctification. Kundalini does not rise even one vertebra if the conditions of sanctity required for that vertebra have not been won.
And he is a strong advocate of white tantra:
It is impossible to attain the intimate self-realisation, whilst one has not killed animal desire. Those who spill the Glass of Hermes [orgasm] are incapable of loving. Love and desire are incompatible. Whoever spills the Glass of Hermes is a victim of animal desire.
The same sexual energies that express in erotic pleasure, when transmuted and sublimated, awaken the consciousness and then produce ecstasy. … The Angel must be born within our very selves. To be born is an absolutely sexual problem and the only path is that of the Perfect Matrimony.
One of the beautiful aspects of Samael Aun Weor’s teachings is his recognition of the oneness behind all religions.
All religions are needed. All religions are diverse manifestations of the Universal Infinite Cosmic Religion. A people without religion would be a serious and lamentable thing. We believe that all schools and sects fulfill their mission teaching, studying, discussing etc. The important thing, and this is fundamental, is that people follow the Path of the Perfect Matrimony. Love is detrimental to no one, harms no one. Gnosis [knowledge of this Mystery] is the flame from which arise all religions, schools and beliefs. Gnosis is Wisdom and Love.
Insights of a student of Samael Aun Weor
Samael Aun Weor addressed more than sex in his writings. In talking to a good friend who has found these writings helpful, I learned that one of the reasons my friend was drawn to the material was because it lined up closely with the philosophy of Gurdjieff/Ouspensky. As he explained,
Man is asleep. We are sleeping even when we believe we are awake. We do not have consciousness. Therefore, we cannot 'do'. We believe we 'do' many things everyday, but the truth is that things merely happen mechanically. We are mechanical beings without awakened consciousness. We have no control over ourselves and our lives because we are being controlled by scores of 'selves' or 'egos' within our psyche. We do not have a permanent center of gravity. We do not know the Truth, and most specifically, we do not know the Truth about ourselves. There is a possibility for change, however. Self-observation (observing and understanding the multitude of egos within us) is the key to first verify the truth behind the previous statements and then to awaken our consciousness.
At the first meeting I attended about the Samael Aun Weor material I raised the similarity of the Gurdjieff/Ouspensky's teachings. The speaker replied that, yes, there are significant similarities, but Ouspensky's System was missing one important aspect. I found out much later that the key that Ouspensky was missing was Sexual Alchemy, a dedicated orgasm-less sexual relationship between husband and wife.
In addition to work on the ego and sexual alchemy, the Gnostic material emphasizes the benefit of sacrifice for humanity.
