Watching too much porn can leave men unable to get an erection when with real life partners.

New research has found that excessive pornography viewing can cause serious psychosexual problems in men – most commonly erectile dysfunction.

However, women who watch a lot of porn are hardly affected by it.

The study, presented at the 112th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association, is based on two surveys conducted on men and women about their porn-viewing habits.

Researchers gave a questionnaire to women aged 20 to 40 who were patients at a military urology clinic, and another to 312 male patients of the same age group.

While the women’s results were what researchers expected, the men’s survey raised alarm bells. Scientists found a very close correlation between excessive pornography use and sexual dysfunction.

On top of that, almost 4% of men said that they preferred masturbating to pornography than actually having sexual intercourse with another person.

Dr Matthew Christman, the staff urologist who led the study, told the conference: ‘The rates of organic causes of erectile dysfunction in this age cohort are extremely low, so the increase in erectile dysfunction that we have seen over time for this group needs to be explained.

‘We believe that pornography use may be one piece to that puzzle.’

Dr Joseph Alukal, director of male reproductive health at New York University, added that porn could be causing performance anxiety in men who are left with unrealistic expectations from the videos they watch.

‘They believe they’re supposed to be able to do what goes on in these movies, and when they can’t it causes a great deal of anxiety,’ he said.
