Gingko Biloba and Prolactin

Hi: I noted the recent posting of an abstract on dopamine and ginko biloba. I also saw this abstract.
From the Reuniting page:

I also spotted a previous report that seems to contradict this paper, that which that gingko biloba "upregulates" prolactin in the cerebral cortex of rats (hmmm ... does this apply to humans).

From the paper cited in Reuniting: "After treatment for 28 days, no significant difference was seen in mount latency, intromission latency, serum T levels, reproductive organ weight, sperm number, or levels of the metabolite of dopamine, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid in the brain with any dose of EGb 761, but significantly reduced serum prolactin levels and increased dopamine levels in the medial preoptic area and arcuate nucleus were seen at the dose of 50 mg/kg. "

But ... from a paper published in 2001:
"The expression [induced by gingko extracts] of a-amino-3-
hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA)-2, calcium
and chloride channels, prolactin, and growth hormone (GH), all of
which are associated with brain function, were also up-regulated"

Can anyone comment? One seems to say that gingko raises prolactin, the other seems to say gingko decreases it.

It's great to have you raising such questions. I'll see if Gary's interested enough to dig around a bit more. Just goes to show that experience may count for more than research!

Since Ginkgo Biloba is a natural product, it is not regulated by the FDA. Consequently, it is easy to obtain in many stores. Nevertheless, people should not be swallowing large amounts of Gingko to increase their sexual stamina, particularly if it is not effective. No one has, to my knowledge, which in any case does not extend very far, demonstrated a positive effect in humans. I have seen it listed, however, as a supplement that can improve sexual stamina, but such claims ubiquitous and often specious.

Apart from that, I'm just curious. Thanks.
